Strong adjectives are adjectives that already express an extreme meaning. In English grammar, they are also called non-gradable adjectives. Unlike normal adjectives, strong adjectives cannot be used with words like very, quite, or a bit. Instead, they are commonly used with intensifiers such as absolutely, completely, or totally.
Strong Adjectives
What Are Strong Adjectives?
A strong adjective already contains an extreme meaning. Because of this, it does not need extra intensifiers like very.
Key rule:
- very + strong adjective ❌ (incorrect)
- absolutely + strong adjective ✅ (correct)
Examples:
- very tired ❌ → exhausted ✅
- very hungry ❌ → starving ✅
- very cold ❌ → freezing ✅
- very big ❌ → huge / enormous ✅

Using strong adjectives makes your English more natural and expressive. However, because they are already extreme, they should be used carefully and only when the situation truly fits.
Strong Adjectives vs. Normal Adjectives
| Normal (Gradable) | Strong (Non-gradable) |
|---|---|
| very tired | exhausted |
| very hungry | starving |
| very angry | furious |
| very funny | hilarious |
| very dirty | filthy |
| very cold | freezing |
