Strong Adjectives in English: Definition, Rules & Examples

Strong adjectives are adjectives that already express an extreme meaning. In English grammar, they are also called non-gradable adjectives. Unlike normal adjectives, strong adjectives cannot be used with words like very, quite, or a bit. Instead, they are commonly used with intensifiers such as absolutely, completely, or totally.

What Are Strong Adjectives?

A strong adjective already contains an extreme meaning. Because of this, it does not need extra intensifiers like very.

Key rule:

  • very + strong adjective ❌ (incorrect)
  • absolutely + strong adjective ✅ (correct)

Examples:

  • very tired ❌ → exhausted
  • very hungry ❌ → starving
  • very cold ❌ → freezing
  • very big ❌ → huge / enormous

Using strong adjectives makes your English more natural and expressive. However, because they are already extreme, they should be used carefully and only when the situation truly fits.
