Cannot or Can Not? The Simple Rule to Choose Right Every Time

Cannot and can not look like simple spelling variations, but they are used for different reasons in real English. One form is the clear default in modern writing, while the other appears only in specific situations—mainly for structure or emphasis.

Cannot: Meaning and Standard Usage

Cannot means to be unable to do something or to be not permitted to do something. It is the standard, preferred form in modern English, especially in formal and neutral writing.

Can’t is the contraction of cannot.

Cannot Examples:

• If you cannot have the best, make the best of what you have.
• You cannot clap with one hand.
• We cannot survive for long without food and water.

In most situations, if you are unsure which form to use, cannot is always correct.

Can Not: When the Words Are Separated

Can not appears as two words only when not belongs to a different part of the sentence structure or when the writer wants to add strong emphasis.

Common cases where can not is correct:

• In the structure not only … but also
• When emphasizing not: I can NOT agree with that.
• When not clearly modifies what follows: I can not just sit here and wait.

Can Not Examples:

• Roads can not only ruin the countryside but also divide communities.
• This change can not only save time but also reduce costs.
• No, you can not go out tonight.
